How to Resist Porn Temptation
Temptation isn't a character test. It's a duration. The urge builds, peaks, and passes — usually within fifteen to twenty minutes. If you can survive that duration, the temptation is gone. The question is how to survive it without relying on willpower, which is exactly the thing that's depleted when the temptation shows up.
The answer is to make the path to the content hard enough that the temptation passes before it completes. You don't resist the temptation. You outlast it. The blocker does the work.
The Blocker
I installed BlockX on Chrome before I needed it. It's a free extension that blocks 70,000+ adult content domains at the network layer. I enabled it in incognito mode — one toggle in chrome://extensions. Then I added keywords for my specific triggers. BlockX intercepts search queries across Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, and other engines.
What Happens When Temptation Shows Up
The temptation fires. I reach for the browser. I type a search. BlockX intercepts it — the keyword is blocked. I try a direct URL. BlockX blocks it. I try incognito. BlockX is enabled there too.
The temptation hits a wall at every entry point. It builds, peaks, and passes — because the path is blocked and the duration runs out before the bypass can complete.
Don't Fight It. Observe It.
The temptation is a wave. It builds, peaks, and passes. If you try to fight it, you're engaging with it, which keeps it alive. If you observe it — "there's the temptation, it's here, it'll pass" — it fades faster.
The blocker makes this easier because you're not fighting the temptation AND fighting the access. The access is already blocked. You just have to not disable the blocker for fifteen minutes. And if you've locked it with a managed policy, you can't.
Get Up and Move
When the temptation is strong, physically change your context. Stand up, walk to another room, get a glass of water. The temptation is wired to a specific context — laptop, evening, bed. Changing the context interrupts the loop.
Don't Negotiate
The temptation will make arguments. "Just this once." "You've earned it." "One time won't matter." These are the dopamine system talking. Don't engage with them. The blocker already made the decision. You don't need to re-decide.
The Honest Part
Resisting temptation isn't about being a stronger person. It's about building a setup where the temptation finds the path blocked and passes before it completes. The blocker does the work. You just have to not undo the work for fifteen minutes. And the lock — the managed policy — makes even that unnecessary.
The temptation has a duration. The blocker creates distance. If the distance exceeds the duration, the temptation passes. That's the whole mechanism.
I still forget it's running most days. Which, it turns out, is exactly the point.
